Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers play a vital role in helping our surf therapy and surf club sessions run safely, smoothly, and supportively — both in and out of the water. Our work simply wouldn’t be possible without the time, energy, and commitment of people who want to give back and be part of something meaningful. Every volunteer contribution — large or small — has a direct and positive impact on the people we support

There are many ways to get involved. Volunteers help with session setup, equipment organisation, participant support, beach safety, and general encouragement and supervision during sessions. Some volunteers are experienced surfers or qualified coaches, while others support from the shoreline — offering practical help, reassurance, and a friendly presence. You do not need to be an expert surfer to volunteer — reliability, empathy, and a supportive attitude are just as important as water skills.

As well as our structured surf therapy courses, all of our surf riders are welcome to attend our weekly surf club sessions. Volunteers help make these ongoing sessions welcoming and well-run, creating a relaxed environment where participants can continue building confidence, strengthening skills, and maintaining social connection. The consistency of these sessions plays an important role in sustaining progress and reducing isolation.

Research continues to show that surf therapy and time spent in the sea can make a measurable difference to mental health and emotional wellbeing. The combination of physical activity, natural blue-space environments, social connection, and mindful engagement with the ocean has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood, and increased resilience. Volunteers are a key part of creating the safe, encouraging atmosphere that allows these benefits to happen.

We work closely with local communities, businesses, partner organisations, and experienced surfers to make our sessions accessible to men who may be struggling or in need of additional support. Our aim is not only to deliver the physical benefits of surfing, but also to create a calm, respectful, and inclusive space where participants can experience the restorative effects of the ocean and supportive peer connection.

All volunteers receive a clear briefing about their role and responsibilities, and sessions are led by experienced coaches and organisers. Safety and wellbeing are always our top priorities.

If you are interested in volunteering at one of our sessions, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please get in touch through our contact page or email us to start the conversation. Let us know a little about your background, availability, and any relevant experience — and we’ll guide you through the next steps.
