Surf & Ocean PROGRAMMES

 

At Ocean Therapy, our sessions are designed to help people connect with the sea, build confidence, and experience the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of being in the ocean. Whether you’re joining us for surf therapy, paddleboarding, beach-based activities or our community surf clubs, each session offers a safe, supportive environment led by experienced coaches and volunteers. Explore the options below to find the session that’s right for you or someone you support.

Surf Therapy combines surfing and supportive coaching to improve wellbeing, confidence, and mental health. Through structured individual or group sessions, participants experience the physical and emotional benefits of being in the ocean in a safe, encouraging environment.

Using the natural rhythm of the sea, surf therapy helps reduce stress, improve focus, and build self-belief. Being in the water encourages people to stay present in the moment, offering a powerful break from everyday worries and anxiety.

Surfing is accessible, non-threatening, and fun — making it an effective way to remove barriers that often prevent people from engaging with traditional support. Whether someone is new to the ocean or already comfortable in the water, sessions are tailored to help each person progress at their own pace.

Across the world, surf therapy is increasingly recognised as a meaningful way to support mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing.

Also known as Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Therapy, this adventure-based method has become increasingly popular over the years. 

 

WHY SUP THERAPY WORKS

 

When a therapist works with clients in a non-traditional setting like paddleboarding, the therapist gets an opportunity to observe how clients respond to their surroundings. If paddleboarding is a new experience for clients, they literally get to test the waters while they are trying to learn something new and overcome their anxiety at the same time. SUP Therapy, like other types of experiential therapy, builds confidence in individuals when they manage to achieve their goals and gain new skills. Listed below are just a few of the many benefits of Paddleboard Therapy:​

SUP Therapy

Ocean Therapy Beach School works in partnership with local authorities, schools and youth groups to provide a unique outdoor learning experience that combines surf therapy with education. Participants learn to surf while building confidence, wellbeing and practical life skills in a supportive coastal environment.

Alongside the physical and mental benefits of time in the ocean, students can work towards nationally recognised qualifications that support personal development and future opportunities. These include training focused on wellbeing, teamwork, communication and outdoor skills — helping young people gain real-world experience, leadership confidence and a stronger connection to the natural environment.
